The Human Respiratory System

The Human Respiratory System – how our body breathes and gets oxygen. We learn about the nose, windpipe, lungs, and how we inhale & exhale to stay alive. Kids will understand why breathing changes when we run or exercise.

  • Learning Objectives

    1. Identify the main parts of the respiratory system (nose, trachea, lungs, diaphragm).
    2. Explain in simple words how breathing (inhale & exhale) works.
    3. Observe how exercise makes breathing rate faster.
    4. Build a simple model to show breathing mechanics.

  • Resources

    - Introductory video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOKmjYwfDGU
    - Recap video: https://youtu.be/mOKmjYwfDGU?si=kX5sGQch6PwliPP
    - Learning Book (LB) pages 13 & 14 for diagrams of lungs.
    - Model making video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcetnVG7SGg
    - Workbook (W.bk) pages 9 & 10 (Challenge Q).

  • Activities

    1. Explore the respiratory system using the intro video and LB pg. 13; label parts on a worksheet.
    2. Experiment: measure breathing rate before & after exercise (run in place) and discuss changes.
    3. Model building: use the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcetnVG7SGg to make a balloon bottle breathing model (LB pg. 15).
    4. Workbook tasks: solve Challenge Q (W.bk pg. 9 & 10) and focus Q1 & Q3 (WB pg.69).
    5. Online Game: “Breathing Race” – kids play an interactive web game where they virtually “inhale/exhale” to move a character through a lung maze, reinforcing breathing concepts. (Can be done at home using a simple browser‑based simulation or video guided game).

  • Assessments

    - Quiz: write keywords about the respiratory system in a notebook (n.bk).
    - Project: draw & label the respiratory system + write a short paragraph explaining breathing.
    - Reflection: answer questions from LB pg.14 & 15 and share what they learned.

Why Learn

ISTE Standard Alignment

ISTE Standard 3:
Knowledge Constructor

Students gather and analyse info from videos & books to build understanding of the respiratory system.

Icon

ISTE Standard 4:
Innovative Designer

Learners design a breathing model and participate in an online game to apply scientific concepts.

Icon

ISTE Standard 6:
Creative Communicator

Students express learning through Creative writing, drawings, and game participation.
