Empowered Learner

The ISTE Standard for Empowered Learners emphasizes students leveraging technology to take an active role in choosing, achieving, and demonstrating their learning.

Example: In an English class at Grandeur Academy, (Class 3-5) are learning about narrative writing. Instead of assigning a generic prompt, the teacher creates a virtual "Idea Board" using a collaborative tool like Padlet. Students are encouraged to browse themes (e.g., adventure, mystery, futuristic) and choose a prompt that sparks their interest.

• Student Choice: Learners pick a theme and submit their narrative topic via the board.
• Technology Integration: Using Google Docs, students write their stories, incorporating teacher-feedback via comments.
• Demonstrating Learning: Finished stories are shared in a virtual gallery (e.g., Google Slides presentation). Peers provide feedback using emoji reactions and comments.
• Reflection: Students reflect on their choices and learning process via a short video submission.

Outcome: Students drive their learning by choosing topics, use tech to collaborate and showcase work, and reflect on their process - embodying the Empowered learner strategy.
